From the Superintendent

Superintendent of Schools
Greetings UISD Employees,

As you well know, Laredo commemorates Washington's Birthday every year throughout the month of February. Campus organizations and students are given the opportunity to participate in numerous activities such as the popular Youth Parade Under the Stars. United ISD appreciates the support of the sponsors, directors, and volunteers who make these events memorable for our students.
Although there are many activities and events taking place, the focus in our schools continues to be on the state assessments. During the early part of next month, fourth and seventh graders will be tested in Writing; ninth graders will be tested in Reading; and tenth and eleventh graders will be tested in the ELA portion of TAKS. I know that everyone has worked tirelessly to make our students successful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their enormous effort and commitment to the students of United ISD. I am confident that our students will continue to experience success and that our District will receive Recognized status.
On another important note, the District has collaborated with the U.S. Census Bureau to set up Questionnaire Assistance Sites/Be Counted Boxes at several campuses throughout our District. These sites will be instrumental to assist our parents/ community members to complete and turn in their census questionnaires which will be mailed out starting on March 15th. These questionnaires are quick and easy to complete, and all information is protected by law. It is extremely important that everyone complete a questionnaire in order for our District to get its fair share of the $400 billion per year allocated to local and state governments. As for community needs, accurate data reflecting changes in our community are crucial in apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Additionally, many other organizations use census data to advocate for causes, rescue disaster victims, prevent diseases, research markets, locate pools of skilled workers, and more. Once again, I urge everyone to complete and submit their questionnaire as soon as possible.
In closing, I would like to recognize District employees for their generous contributions to the Hope for Haiti Campaign. Collectively, our District contributed over $24,000 to assist this disaster stricken country. Thanks to all of you for your giving spirit and your participation.

Best regards,
