UISD Hosts Relay For Life to Mark 40 Years of Hope, Honor, and Healing

The United Independent School District will host the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event at the Student Activity Center (SAC) Visitor’s Parking Lot on Friday, April 25th, from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM.

This year marks a significant milestone: the 40th anniversary of Relay For Life, a heartfelt and unifying movement that honors cancer survivors, remembers those lost, and raises critical funds for research and patient support, according to the ACS website.

Among this year’s honored participants is a UISD family who has been recognized by the American Cancer Society as a Voice of Hope for South Texas — Ruben and Patty Vela. Their story is one of resilience, advocacy, and inspiration.

Ruben Vela, a UISD cameraman, was diagnosed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer in 2019. Doctors gave him just 30 days to live. Today, six years later, Ruben is a proud survivor and determined advocate  and a proud participant of Relay for Life annually, along with his support team called Ruben’s Warriors.

“It’s important that people go get themselves checked out. What I went through, I didn’t expect to happen to me,” Ruben shared. “My symptoms were nausea, jaundice, and loss of weight. I am just so grateful — thanks to my family, doctors, and support system, I’m here. Now, I want to tell people: go check yourselves.”

His wife, Patty Vela, a Head Start educator and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network), recalls how daunting the diagnosis was.

“It was difficult at first processing the diagnosis,” she said. “Then it was about getting help and trying to find the right doctors. My advice to people is: realize there is help out there. Don’t hesitate to reach out.”

The Velas have since taken their message across Texas, speaking at events and sharing their journey to give hope to other families facing cancer. Their impact has been formally recognized through their selection as Voices of Hope — a designation that honors cancer survivors and caregivers who inspire others with their courage and commitment.

“We want people to know there is hope for those battling this deadly disease,” Ruben said. “We’re sharing our journey, and hopefully we can help anyone going through this. It’s not just about us, it’s about helping others cope and spreading awareness.”

Patty added, “We are deeply humbled to be nominated for the esteemed American Cancer Society Voices of Hope — a testament to our community’s collective efforts. As the second individuals in Laredo to receive this distinction, we’re filled with gratitude. We also acknowledge Laura Nañez, the trailblazing first recipient, for paving the way. Your support has made this possible. We are truly blessed.”

Relay For Life is more than a walk — it’s a moving celebration. The event includes special moments like the Survivor and Caregiver Celebration and the Luminaria Ceremony, where candles are lit to remember those lost to cancer. Teams walk the track throughout the evening, symbolizing the ongoing fight and continuous hope for a cure.

This year’s event in Laredo is supported by several UISD departments, including Athletics, Support and Facilities Services, Maintenance and Operations, Fine Arts, UISD Police, Staff Development, Communications/Public Relations, and Wellness. It’s a community-wide effort that reflects the spirit of compassion and collaboration.

The public is invited to attend and participate. Whether walking, donating, or simply showing up in support, every action makes a difference.

For those seeking help or information about cancer, the American Cancer Society’s 24/7 helpline is available at 1-800-227-2345. PanCAN’s helpline can be reached at 1-877-272-6226.

UISD invites the community to participate. "Let’s come together on April 25th to honor the past, fight for the future, and walk in hope. See you at Relay For Life!"
