United Independent School District proudly announces that three outstanding seniors from John B. Alexander High School have been awarded the prestigious Gates Scholarship for 2025. This exceptional honor goes to Eric G. Garcia, Maria Regina Martinez, and Ofelia Alessandra Gonzalez Montemayor, each of whom exemplifies academic excellence, leadership, and resilience.
The Gates Scholarship is a highly competitive, last-dollar award that covers the full cost of attendance—including tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation—not already covered by other financial aid. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, it has been awarded this year to only 750 students nationwide from over 48,000 applicants. Beyond financial support, the scholarship offers mentorship, career guidance, and leadership development.
Melissa Chapa, UISD Director of Guidance and Counseling, shared words of inspiration for the recipients:
“Your selection as a Gates Scholar is not just a recognition of your past achievements, but an investment in your future impact. Embrace this opportunity with courage, lead with compassion, and use the power of your education to uplift communities and create a more equitable world. The path ahead is bright – go forth and illuminate it.”
Alexander High School counselors worked closely with students seeking financial assistance for college. They expressed immense pride in this milestone.
“The Gates Scholarship is awarded to high-achieving, lower-income minority students in the U.S. to fully fund their bachelor’s degrees. It’s not just about academics—it’s about leadership and service,” explained counselor Ada Ballesteros.
“The last time Alexander had a Gates Scholar was in 2018. This year, we are honored to celebrate three,” added counselor Brenda Herrera. "This is a tremendous honor for our students and our school."
"These students have worked diligently throughout their high school career; therefore, all their hard work and efforts have played a big role in earning this distinction," added counselor Bertha V. Lopez.

A Community Achievement
Receiving one Gates Scholarship is a rare and significant achievement—earning three in a single year is historic. As part of their journey, the scholars will participate in the Gates Scholarship Summer Institute and a national conference designed to foster connection, empowerment, and lifelong success.
The Gates Foundation congratulated the recipients in an official letter:
“As one of 750 Scholars chosen from a pool of over 48,000 applicants from across the nation, you now belong to an elite group of young leaders—all of whom represent the very pinnacle of academic achievement, service, and commitment.”
United ISD extends heartfelt congratulations to Eric, Maria, and Ofelia, as well as to their families, teachers, counselors, and administrators who supported their journey. These students are a testament to the power of dedication, education, and community support.
