UISD Board Member Creates New Champions of Legacy&Resilience Scholarship for Extraordinary Graduates

The United Independent School District proudly celebrates two exceptional graduates whose courage, perseverance, and determination serve as an inspiration to all. Cristian Rodriguez of J.B. Alexander High School and Luis Lauro Perez of United High School have been named the first-ever recipients of the newly established Champions of Legacy & Resilience Scholarship, an award created to honor students in Special Education who have overcome adversity and continue to strive for excellence.

The $500 scholarships, personally funded by UISD Board Secretary and District 6 Board Member Michelle Molina, recognize not only academic success but also the unwavering strength and character it takes to rise above challenges. “This is the beginning of many to come,” said Board Secretary Michelle Molina. “Every semester we are looking to grow this program and partner with higher education institutions. We really want to push for all students to have an opportunity to begin their higher education journey.”

The Champions of Legacy & Resilience Scholarship stands for more than academic milestones, it embodies determination, heart, and lasting impact.  “Champion– is not just winning,” added Molina. “It's individuals who rise above adversity, excel in their journey and inspire others. Legacy is about breaking barriers and paving the way for the future success of others. When it comes to resilience, it’s an inner strength that you possess and have earned through life’s toughest moments. It’s about bouncing back and moving forward despite any setbacks, obstacles or any kind of disability.”

Cristian Rodriguez, a standout graduate from AHS, will be majoring in Computer Science at TAMIU. He completed three programs of study: Business & Industry, STEM and Multidisciplinary, earning certifications in Entrepreneurship & Small Business and Autodesk Certified User. A proud member of the J.B. Alexander High School Robotics Team, Cristian helped lead his team to the UIL State Robotics Competition three years in a row.

Luis Lauro Perez of United High School graduated under the Distinguished Level of Achievement, with endorsements in Cyber Security and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration). Through the Early Start Pathway Dual Enrollment Program, he earned college credit while also completing his HVAC Certification from Laredo College. This Fall, Luis plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at TAMIU.

“These students represent what it means to rise above,” said UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz. “Congratulations to the parents also. “There is a real need for higher ed financial assistance. It is expensive, so whatever we can do to ensure we have resources in place to help our students and families overcome financial barriers, we must.”

UISD Director of Special Education Francisco Gutierrez praised this new initiative, “Mrs. Molina is always advocating for us and our students. Promoting inclusivity and awareness.”

Molina envisions the scholarship expanding in the years to come. “We’ve got all the tools,” said Molina. “We have the platform and we really want to see this catapult and grow in the next couple of years.”

Both families expressed gratitude for the recognition and financial support that comes with it. The Champions of Legacy & Resilience Scholarship is a powerful reminder that every challenge overcome brings them closer to their dreams.
